Rita Jalali, Ph.D is a sociologist and Senior Scholar in Residence in the Department of Sociology and Center on Health, Risk, and Society (CHRS). Her research has focused on cross-national issues of race, ethnicity, and caste; social movements; state-society relations; NGO-donor relations; gender inequalities; socio-political factors in disaster management; and water, sanitation, and menstrual hygiene. She has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals in these areas. Her primary field work has been in India and Turkey. Her current work in the field of water, sanitation, and menstrual hygiene focuses on several research areas, including: a) historical examination of water, sanitation, and hygiene issues in multilateral development organizations using quantitative and qualitative methods; b) gender bias in the intra-household expenditure on hygiene products; c) menstrual and other hygiene practices in Indian poor communities and its social and health impact; d) the absence of menstrual health and hygiene policy in disaster management in Turkey; e) the social and political factors in the adoption of menstrual equity policies in US.
