Improving access to school has been a component in gobal poverty reduction intitiatives for decades. Yet, despite global levels of school enrollment reaching an all-time high, global poverty reduction has slowed. In this paper, I test whether focusing on alternative measurements of education, like test scores, is more effective in predicting reductions in poverty when compared to school enrollment. I find that, while both access and quality of education are important in reducing poverty levels, quality of education has a stronger effect. Furthermore, I assess how differences in income levels across countries can affect returns to education.
  • Wharff, Michael, May 2023, "Taking Off or Turbulence? An Empirical Analysis of the Price Effects of the U.S. Airways and American Airlines Merger"
Ever since the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, airline mergers have been a hot topic of debate in the fields of antitrust and industrial organization. While the empirical evidence covering early airline mergers largely suggests these mergers remains unclear. This paper contributes to the existing literature by conducting a difference-in-differences analysis on the domestic pricing effects of the U.S. Airways and American Airlines merger. My analysis suggests small, but highly statistically significant, increases in airfares in markets affected by the U.S. Airways and American Airlines merger. However, overall welfare effects remain unclear.
